Why Drink Chamomile Tea?

September 14, 2021 2 min read

If you are just discovering chamomile tea, then welcome. But chamomile goes back many years. It has been used throughout the years as a flavoring, functional enhancement, and tea.

It has a strong scent and flavor and is found in many places of the world. It is found in foods, drinks, medical remedies, fragrances, oils, topical creams, and even in tablet form.

What is Chamomile?

Going back a few centuries, there are two main types of Chamomile. German chamomile, Matricaria chamomilla, and Roman chamomile, Chamaemelum nobile.

Roman chamomile is bitter when used in tea, where German chamomile is sweeter. The Roman chamomile is a perennial plant and the German chamomile is an annual, so it needs to be replanted each year.

The word chamomile comes from the Greek for ‘ground apple’. Referring to its fresh scent and flavor, it resembles a daisy when growing. Once only grown in a few specific areas, it’s now grown all over the world.

The History of Chamomile

Herbs and plants in general have a long, deep history in medicinal uses and other household uses. People living in ancient times obviously did not have the medicines and medical knowledge that we have today.

They also had to fight off plagues and diseases they knew nothing about so they used what they had. Plants. This helped them deal with the symptoms, at least, if not being able to cure these infections.

The chamomile flowers may have been used as is, to be eaten or added to food or liquids. They were also rubbed on the skin and crushed or burned for the soothing aroma.

It was also likely used in ceremonies and rituals, used in cosmetics and other beauty aids, and worn in the hair and as a garland for luck, health, and the pleasing scent it gave off.

People have been drinking chamomile tea since ancient Egypt. It was not only enjoyed as a calming, relaxing tea but also often given to those suffering from colds.
